The WiSCi (Women in Science) STEAM Camp was in Malawi! The theme for WiSci 2017 was using technology to create a safer, more secure world, with a focus on preventing gender-based violence. The camp brought together 100 girls from Malawi, U.S., Liberia, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia hosted at Malawi University of Science and Technology in Thyolo.

The opening ceremony took place on July 30th and was graced by the Guest of Honour and U.S. Ambassador to Malawi Virginia Palmer. During these two weeks, the young ladies participated in various scientific activities. They had Microbiology sessions with the team from the American Society of Biology, developed Android Apps with Google, and built robots and an electronic piano using Arduino IDE Windows with Intel!

It wasn't all work and no fun because they all got the chance to tour Mulanje Mountain, visit tea plantations, and enjoy a live concert by the Zathu Band. The two weeks long camp was closed on 14th August, 2017 by Her Excellency the First Lady Dr. Getrude Mutharika who was accompanied by the Second Lady Mrs. Mary Chilima.
