MHUB CHAMPIONING DIGITAL SKILLS TRAINING IN MALAWI
In line with mHub’s technology aspect, the Hub implemented the Africa Code Week in Malawi in September 2019. Africa Code Week is an initiative implemented by Google that strides to instil digital literacy and coding skills in the young generation working closely with private, public and non-profit partners to drive sustainable learning impact across Africa.
mHub facilitated the training of school teachers and as well their students, to ensure the sustainability of skills taught during Africa Code Week. mHub trained a total of 178 teachers from Rumphi, Karonga, Chitipa, Mzimba, Mzuzu and Nkhata-bay in basic coding skills which they later passed on to 805 of their students. The Training of Trainers (TOT) was conducted on 3rd September 2019 to the 6th of September 2019.

mHub conducted a second wave of trainings, reaching out to 903 boys and girls on basic coding skills. The students came from various Secondary Schools within the capital city, Lilongwe. The total number of boys and girls trained during Africa Code Week was 1708.
To actualize the maximum potential from students, mHub requires additional resources to support the students and their teachers. The major implementation challenge was the lack of digital equipment such as computers to facilitate the trainings. Despite this, the team used visualization concepts and dramatizations to enhance understanding of basic coding skills.
mHub’s vision is to equip students with basic coding and digital skills that will be key to solving social and business problems in their communities and the world. The world is quickly moving towards a digital age that requires an individual’s understanding of the digital space to progress. Coding skills further equip learners with problem solving and critical thinking skills that are catalytic skills for future leaders. With additional resources and time, we can step closer to this vision and champion communities of digital change makers.
The goal of Africa Code week is to equip future generations with the coding skills they need to thrive in the 21st century workforce and become key actors of Africa’s economic development. MHub wants to start with Malawi.
